The official opening of new Soul Kitchen Hostel was celebrated in St. Petersburg in June 2012. Up to this point the organization rented a tight space near Moscow railway station. And despite the fact that the old Soul Kitchen won “The Best Russian Hostel” award from Hostelworld.com in 2010, the owners left it for a more spacious place.

The youth hostel occupies an ex-communal apartment of 1863, which served as a set-dressing of several “The Master and Margarita” movie scenes and a few TV shows. Renovation process took about a year and was made using many racy details left after ex-renters. Furnishing proved to be surprisingly laborious: juicy stuff was collected from flea markets, auctions, Internet shops. Many pieces were re-made and restored. Thus, chairs were re-painted and re-upholstered by efforts of the owners. As the refurbishment was in full play the entire furniture was stored and painted right in the lodgings of the hostel founders.

Elements, which survived all the changes since 1863, — ceiling moldings, fireplaces, tiles, coal-pots, original doors (which, by the way, serve as computer and reception desks now) — juxtapose with such contemporary accents as Miura chairs and Hanna Werning wallpaper.

Most of the rooms in Soul Kitchen are hotel-type, and community rooms are furnished with curtained custom-made beds. Each client has a personal shelf, lamp, socket, and a locker for luggage. Loft beds, raised floors and sofas are custom-made. Dining tables and a wall bracket lamp of wooden beam, which used to be a piece of wall framing, are the hostel owner’s hand-mades.

A red wooden man on the mirror is special: custom-made by a famous art group, it comes to every employee going abroad in exchange for a photo made against the background of a sightseeing attraction. A “cozy log” was found by the hostel owner right in the street as he was coming back from a rock concert.
